Character Education
The need for character education in Virginia is regularly brought to our attention by the data reported in our state's media. There is concern in many of our school divisions, as there is nationally, that the number of suspensions, expulsions, teenage pregnancies, and incidents of youth violence are far too high. While the school's primary mission is to promote academic achievement, there is nonetheless a real need for schools to promote character development as well. Studies have shown that when teachers and administrators model core values and students learn skills to resolve conflict peacefully, practice pro-social behaviors, and engage in service to the community, schools have a lower incidence of violence.
