How to Obtain Teacher
Licensure Requirements:

(1) Go to the Teacher Education and Licensure Web Site, Licensure Regulations, at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Compliance/TeacherED/nulicvr.pdf.
Page 25 of that document provides the general education requirements for all teachers.  Page 30 of that document provides the criteria for a Business and Information Technology teacher endorsement. Page 45 of that document provides the criteria for an add-on Keyboarding endorsement. Potential teachers who started under a previous program may finish that program; or, they may switch to the new program with a slight fee. All final decisions regarding licensure must be made in the Teacher Education and Licensure Division of the Virginia Department of Education, 804-371-2471. Judith Sams is available to advise on, but not to determine, licensure questions at 804-371-0196.

(2) If you need further education, contact a college or university from the list above and consult with that institution on your needs to complete the requirements. Once you are enrolled in a college or university's program, they communicate with the Department of Education for you. If you cannot find a program suitable to your location and schedule from the list above, you may want to investigate the online opportunities listed after item number three below.

(3) If you are hired by a school division while you are finishing your credentials for teaching, there is a contact person in the school division who handles all teacher certification questions. That person will communicate with the Department of Education for you. You will probably be placed on a provisional certificate while you complete your credentials.
