GENDER EQUITY PROGRAM
The purpose of the Gender Equity Program in Virginia is to:
Promote gender-fair educational and career opportunities
Ensure educational and career opportunities free of gender bias and gender role stereotyping for secondary and postsecondary students
Provide full access to all programs in vocational education, mathematics, science, technology, and other areas of the secondary and post-secondary curriculum
Funding for the program is available through the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Education Act of 1990, which also provides funding for grants to serve targeted
populations, such as single parents, displaced homemakers, teen parents, and women in
nontraditional programs. Most of these grants provide vocational education leading to
marketable skills and support services, such as child care and transportation. Currently, there are 42 grants throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia at school division, community college, and community-based sites.
