Marketing prepares students for
careers in the marketing of goods and services including:
Marketing careers require academic skills
as well as marketing competence. To help students gain proficiency, teachers reinforce Virginia's academic
Standards of Learning in English, mathematics, science, and history/social science as they apply to the
Marketing curriculum.
Student requirements for many Marketing courses vary depending on whether the course uses the
cooperative education method or the occupational experiences method.
The Cooperative Education Method
Courses using the cooperative education
method offer a combination of classroom instruction and supervised on-the-job training with continuing
supervision throughout the school year.
Courses using the occupational experiences method combine classroom instruction with occupational
experiences consisting of simulations, school and community-based projects, and/or periodic employment
in selected local marketing businesses.
In certain courses, the occupational experiences method is conducted using the laboratory approach.
Students combine intensive classroom instruction and occupational experiences in daily blocks of instruction
that are planned, supervised, and documented by the Marketing teacher-coordinator.
DECA
The co-curricular Marketing student
organization, DECA: An Association of Marketing Students, is designed to support and strengthen the
marketing curriculum and instructional program and reinforce academic concepts related to marketing.
Through participation in local, state, and national activities, DECA members develop a better understanding
of the business world, increase awareness of their civic obligations, and develop social poise and leadership
skills.
Marketing courses prepare students for entry-level positions and/or continued education in a variety of
careers that require knowledge of communications, economics, and psychology as well as techniques in sales, promotion, and management. Examples includes sales, public relations, business management, product design and merchandising, fund-raising, advertising and promotion using all types of media, and international
marketing.
