School Nurse Institute 1990, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) initiated the School Nurse Institute for the purpose of offering continuing education activities to school nurses in Virginia. Through contractual arrangements with Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Nursing, and Virginia Institute for Developmental Disabilities (VIDD), the School Nurse Institute has provided a variety of continuing education activities and resources for school nurses across the Commonwealth. Major funding for these activities has been provided by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (Title V, Social Security Act), Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, administered by Virginia Department of Health.
[ Top of Page ] Partnership Steering Committee In 1997, representatives from Virginia Department of Health (Nancy Ford, MPH, RN, School Health Nurse Consultant), Virginia Department of Education (Gwen Smith, MSN, RN, School Health Services Specialist), and Virginia Institute for Developmental Disabilities (Ann Cox, PhD, RN, Associate Director) formed a School Nurse Institute Partnership Steering Committee to determine the feasibility of developing public-private partnerships with institutes of higher learning for the purpose of enhancing and coordinating school nursing-related continuing education activities throughout Virginia. As a preliminary activity, VDH--through a contractual arrangement with VIDD--developed and published an assessment of Virginia school nurses' continuing education needs and distance learning technology. Results are published in the report 1997 School Nurse Institute Project, Virginia Department of Health, April 1998.
