The Guide for Students and Parents answers many frequently asked questions about the Governor’s Foreign Language Academies. The student application packets are available only at this Web site in two file formats. The Word file can be downloaded, completed, and printed using Microsoft Word, and the PDF file can be printed and completed by hand.
The process for submitting applications and student data for nominees to the Governor’s Foreign Language Academies has been modified FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS to allow for direct entry of student data into a secure Web site. This change in procedures will result in more time for students and schools to prepare the applications, increased accuracy in student data, and a faster application review process. The process will be expanded to include private schools at a later date. At this time, private schools will continue follow the same procedures as in the past, and private school student data will be entered by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Detailed information about the nominee submission process is provided in the Guide for School Personnel, found at this Web site.

Applications for Directors, Teachers, Resident Assistants
and Teacher Observers
Language administrators, educators, teachers, and college students interested in a position at the 2008 Academies are encouraged to apply. Most of the faculty and staff at the Governor's Foreign Language Academies are Virginia public secondary school teachers, approximately 6 per academy. Occasionally a private school teacher or a college professor will be a part of the staff. Also, approximately 6 young people per immersion academy and 3 young people per non-immersion academy assist faculty in instruction and monitor dormitory behavior. These resident advisors are native speakers, college majors, or former Academy students.
Language teachers from across the state are also encouraged to apply to visit the academy of their language (French, German, Spanish or Latin) as a teacher observer. Seeing the staff and students in action and taking an active role in some activities has proven highly successful as a leadership and professional development experience.

Public school divisions will create a Verification Report (previously called a Nominee Report) online through a secure Web site at https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/ssws/login.page.do. Schools will enter student data directly to this Web site prior to mailing the student applications.
Private schools will submit a Head of School Tuition Certification form (previously called a Nominee Report). This form is attachment B of the Guide for School Personnel. The online submission process will be expanded to include private schools in the future.
