ARI :: Diagnostic Test
The Virginia Department of Education in partnership with Internet Testing Systems (ITS) designed the Algebra Readiness Diagnostic Test System (ARDT) as a 100% Web-based application that employs a sophisticated Computer Adaptive Testing engine to help determine student proficiency in mathematics. The assessment is administered in schools on a computer connected to the Internet. The application draws from a pool of over 2000 test items in real time. The test items are correlated to the Mathematics Standards of Learning for grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and Algebra I and were reviewed by a group of Virginia educators for accuracy and validity.
Results from the diagnostic test are available immediately and provide information correlated to the Standards of Learning reporting categories. This information is beneficial in developing and focusing an intervention program for those students who are most at risk.
Students targeted to take the diagnostic tests include those who meet the following criteria:
students who were not successful in their previous intervention/remediation program; or
students who performed below average in their previous year's mathematics program; or
students who did not pass the state-administered Standards of Learning mathematics assessment test.
Students targeted to participate in the intervention program include those who did not pass the appropriate diagnostic test.
The Department of Education provides for pre- and post-testing of a specified number of students in order for school divisions to determine individual needs of the students and to monitor progress. School divisions have the option of using the state-provided diagnostic test or using locally developed or selected diagnostic tests that align with specified criteria. These tests must be approved by the Department of Education.
In addition to the unlimited Computer Adpative Testing (CAT) that is available to each student enrolled in the Algebra Readiness Intiative, there are unlimited strand tests available per student. These 10-question tests are designated by strand and grade level. Teachers can use these to gather additional information about student strengths and weaknesses between administration of the pre- and post-tests.
