Interactive Reading, a teacher training module for reading comprehension instruction, combines research-based strategies, many of which are used by Virginia teachers, into a framework for teachers and students to use regularly with a variety of texts. It is appropriate across the curriculum in grades four through eight. Interactive Reading is based on the research of Palinscar and Brown, Richardson and Morgan, and Vacca and Vacca who all advocate that students interact with text and each other prior to reading, during reading, and after reading. Strategies are isolated briefly and only for the purpose of defining and introducing them. These strategies are then merged into an interactive and natural thinking repertoire that includes writing at almost every stage. Attached are six files with which Virginia’s teachers can help students move from decoding to comprehension through interaction, discussion, and writing.
