Instructional Activity or Strategy
Recycling Papers
This activity enables young students to participate in a community
project.
Steps To Complete the Activity
- Discuss the importance of recycling by identifying uses of recycled
products.
- Have students make posters to encourage recycling as part of a school-wide
ad campaign.
- Have the class decorate one or more boxes to collect newspapers
and/or mixed paper for recycling.
- Each week, place a different student in charge of collecting the
papers and taking the box to the office to be picked up (or taken
to a central location) for recycling.
- Visit a recycling plant or invite a guest speaker to explain how
recycling works.
- Allow students to observe as their collection of paper is weighed.
- Have students record the weight and chart it over time. At the end
of the school year, have students total the weight of all paper to
be recycled.
