Four Schools Win
Architectural Awards

Four schools were recognized recently by the Virginia Department of Education for architectural excellence. The honored schools include two new buildings and two renovated schools. Two jurors from outside Virginia selected the winning schools from among 18 entries during a February 24-25 department-sponsored conference and exhibit at the Virginia Crossings Resort in Richmond.

New Construction, K-5: Carlin Springs Elementary School, Arlington County Public Schools, Robert G. Smith, superintendent, Grimm + Parker Architects, architect.

This design reflects the school’s theme of environmental consciousness and creates attractive and inviting learning environments.

New Construction, 6-12: Deep Run High School, Henrico County Public Schools, Mark A. Edwards, superintendent, Moseley Architects, architect.

This design features a nontraditional look for a high school and an exciting interplay of masonry, glass, and steel.

Renovation/Addition, K-5: Providence Elementary School, Fairfax City Public Schools,
George E. Stepp, superintendent,
BerryRio Architecture + Interiors, architects.

This design provides a pleasant, exciting, and safe learning environment while blending well with the existing structure.

Renovation/Addition, 6-12: Floyd T. Binns Middle School, Culpeper County Public Schools, David A. Cox, superintendent, Rodriguez Ripley Maddux Motley Architects, architect.

The design of this major addition is sensitive to the historic school and community and uses natural light to create functional and inviting learning spaces

The winning school divisions and architects were awarded plaques. More than 30 school divisions participated in the conference. For more information, contact A.K. (Vijay) Ramnarain, architectural consultant, Office of Support Services, (804) 225-2035.
