Additional High-Performing Schools,
School Divisions Earn Title I Recognitions

Thirteen additional public school divisions and 98 additional schools join the list of schools previously announced as being honored for raising the achievement of economically disadvantaged students and for exceeding state accreditation standards and the annual objectives of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). In all, 15 school divisions and 107 Title I schools received awards based on student achievement during 2004-2005.

School divisions earning the designation of “Distinguished Title I School Division” by making what NCLB defines as adequate yearly progress (AYP) for two consecutive years and exceeding all annual achievement objectives, are as follows:

  • Buena Vista
  • Charles City County
  • Chesterfield County
  • Colonial Beach
  • Craig County
  • Henrico County
  • Highland County
  • Hopewell
  • Lexington
  • Prince George
  • Richmond County
  • West Point

Earlier this month, the Board of Education recognized Scott County as a “Distinguished Title I School Division.” Fairfax County was recognized as a “Highly Distinguished Title I School Division” for exceeding federal benchmarks for achievement in reading and mathematics, and for making progress in closing achievement gaps between student groups.

Each “Title I Distinguished School” will receive a framed certificate and an outdoor banner celebrating its status and achievement. The schools, grouped by division, include:

  • Amherst County – Pleasant View Elementary, Temperance Elementary

  • Buckingham County – Buckingham Elementary

The additional school divisions and schools were identified for the recognitions after the Department of Education discovered an error in the program used to compare school and division-level data with the criteria for the awards.
