Students Identify Three Issues for Study and Recommendations

Eight high school and four middle school students have been selected to serve on the Board of Education’s 2008-2009 Student Advisory Committee. Board of Education members Isis M. Castro and Eleanor B. Saslaw will serve as mentors to the committee members as they study issues of interest to students and prepare recommendations for the board.

The Student Advisory Committee members are as follows:

  • Johnathan “Drake” Bishop, Nottoway High School, Nottoway County
  • Meghan Bryan, Eagle Ridge Middle School, Loudoun County
  • Tara Coleman, Council High School, Buchanan County
  • Calvin Hunt, Millbrook High School, Frederick County
  • Kevin Kabaria, Richlands Middle School, Tazewell County
  • David Krawczyk, William Fleming High School, Roanoke

  • Kiyoko Timmons, Richmond Community High School, Richmond
  • Madison Wilson, Harrisonburg High School, Harrisonburg

The 2008-2009 Student Advisory Committee held its first meeting on December 11 in Richmond and identified online learning; the role of foreign language and technology instruction in preparing young people for the global economy; and student recognition programs as the issues it will study. The students will report their findings and recommendations to the board in the spring.

The Student Advisory Committee was established in 2000 as a means for students to advise the board on issues affecting students in the commonwealth’s public schools. The committee includes one high school student from each of VDOE’s eight study regions and four middle school students selected at large. The students are selected from nominations received from high schools, middle schools and statewide student organizations.
