list of 100 best ~

RICHMOND – Governor Timothy M. Kaine today congratulated Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County for being named the nation’s best high school by U.S. News & World Report. Thomas Jefferson High was one of four Virginia schools — all in Fairfax County — to make the magazine’s annual list of America’s top 100 high schools.

“Thomas Jefferson High School has a well-deserved reputation for excellence and innovation,” said Governor Timothy M. Kaine. “This latest honor reflects the continued commitment to excellence shared by educators at Thomas Jefferson High and in Fairfax County and the vision of the Commonwealth in establishing a system of regional Governor’s Schools for exceptional students.”

Earlier this year, Thomas Jefferson High — along with the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies in Richmond — was named as one of Newsweek magazine’s 18 “public elite” high schools.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology was founded in 1985 as a result of a partnership between Fairfax County Public Schools and businesses interested in increasing opportunities for instruction in science, mathematics and technology. It is one of 18 regional academic-year Governor’s Schools in the Commonwealth and also enrolls students from Arlington, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William counties and Falls Church.

U.S. News & World Report’s national rankings take into account achievement in reading and mathematics and on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate examinations. Also ranked in the magazine’s top 100 list are McLean High School at 55, Langley High School at 76 and W.T. Woodson High School at 90.
