STATEMENT OF GOVERNOR KAINE
RICHMOND – Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that Dr. Billy K. Cannaday Jr. will resign from the position of State Superintendent of Public Instruction, effective September 30, 2008, to become Dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at the University of Virginia, effective October 1, 2008. “Dr. Cannaday has been central to my administration and I will miss his counsel,” Governor Kaine said. “His service to the Commonwealth has been exemplary, and I’m certain he will continue to successfully serve the people of Virginia and the University of Virginia with the same enthusiasm.” Dr. Cannaday played an integral role in shifting the focus of Virginia’s public education system from competence to excellence. He has driven key initiatives of Governor Kaine including expanding access to high quality preschool education for Virginia’s 4 year olds and raising the status of career and technical education in Virginia.
