Four Schools Win Architectural Awards

Four schools were recognized recently by the Virginia Department of Education for architectural excellence. The honored schools include two new buildings and two renovated schools. Two jurors from outside Virginia and a local superintendent selected the winning schools from among 18 entries during a February 25-26 department-sponsored conference and exhibit at the Hotel Roanoke.

The jurors were impressed with the quality and creativity of all the entries, but cited the following for exemplary design:

New Construction, K-5: Cougar Elementary School, Manassas Park City Schools, Thomas H. DeBolt, superintendent, VMDO Architects.

This design was cited for its “school within a school” concept, effective use of natural lighting, and interior and exterior architectural balance.

New Construction, 6-12: Oak Knoll Middle School, Hanover County Public Schools, Stewart D. Roberson, superintendent, Rancorn Wildman Architects.

This school was cited for versatility of configuration, central location and accessibility of exploratories and media center, clarity of site layout and orientation, and balance between building efficiency and exterior exposure.

Renovation/Addition, K-5: Gladeville Elementary School, Carroll County Public Schools, Oliver A. McBride, superintendent, Rodrigues Ripley Maddux Motley Architects

This design was cited for its scale and residential atmosphere, its integration with the existing building, its proportion, and its enhancement of the character and entry sequence of the building.

Renovation/Addition, 6-12: Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School (Richmond), Paul Tiscornia, principal, BCWH Architects.

The Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School renovation was cited for its remarkable transformation of a historic structure, the variety of interior spaces, pervasiveness of technology, and student-centered design.

The winning schools were awarded plaques. More than 30 school divisions participated in the conference. For more information, contact David L. Boddy, associate director, Office of Support Services, (804) 225-2035.
