I think first of all, Virginia is in a very good position of having embraced standards, not to be forced into them, but understanding that our children deserve great opportunity, and without high expectations, there could be none. One of the most demeaning things you could do is say to a child, “I don’t think you can.” And not only is it demeaning to them, but it is demeaning to all of those who now will suffer because a child does not feel hopeful.
