2006 Virginia Public School Convocation Highlights

Dr. Cannaday reflects on his conversations with teachers across Virginia. “Our work is mission work. Only a few called can do the work.”

In Franklin County
People talk about our business all the time as though everyone can teach. They can’t. They know what it looks like but our work is mission work. Only a few called can do the work because you have to have a passion for it. Remember, children many times gain their passion from watching us.

In VDOE Studio
Well, I wanted to have an opportunity to learn about public schools across the commonwealth, from Southwest Virginia to Hampton Roads. And I felt one of the best ways to do that is to go where our teachers and administrators live and work for our children.

Our job is to help each child discover what his or her passion is and understand that effort still matters – not luck, effort.

The message resonates across the commonwealth differently when you are in the places where the heavy lifting if done. That is where the teachers and children are.

And as you watch them, remember, it takes a while sometimes for that seed to germinate. But once it does, great things will happen. God bless all of you and make a difference for your children this year.
