Libraries & Academic Achievement
Information Power, a publication of the American Library
Association and the Association for Educational Communications
and Technology provides the foundation for the development
of the Linking Libraries and Academic Achievement (LLAA)
initiative. Information Power establishes national standards
for student information literacy and outlines the role
of the school library media center as a powerful and
active partner in the school instructional program.
Information literacy is the ability to effectively locate,
use, and communicate information to demonstrate learning
and to develop the skills needed for life-long learning.
The goal of this initiative is to provide guidance
to school library media specialists in the development
of best practices for teaching and learning. The resource
documents identify skills that students need in order
to be successful in meeting the Virginia Standards of
Learning. It also provides strategies and activities
that integrate technology into the curriculum and fosters
the development of literacy skills that will enable
students to become discriminating and efficient users
of information.
