Grant funds will be made available to all Honor Schools to develop, implement, and/or enhance transition programs to target special assistance to ninth grade students. Honor Schools may request up to $12,000 for year one of the grant (February 2006 – July 31, 2006) and up to $14,000 for year two of the grant (August 1, 2006 – July 31, 2007). All funding will be awarded on a reimbursement basis pending available funds. Year-one grant applications are due to the Department of Education by January 23, 2006. Year-two grant applications are due to the Department of Education by July 10, 2006.
Transition programs should include one or more of the following components and/or other activities identified by the school leadership team:
- A plan(s) to create enhanced transition for students from grade 8 to grade 9;
- A plan(s) to identify ninth grade students at risk of failure;
- A plan(s) to implement instructional and organizational strategies that focus on student motivation and academic success;
- A plan(s) to focus on improving literacy among ninth grade students.
