Welcome to the Virginia Department of Education’s information clearinghouse for the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). This sweeping federal legislation requires states to demonstrate progress from year to year in raising the percentage of students who are proficient in reading and mathematics and in narrowing the achievement gap. NCLB sets five performance goals for states:

All students will reach high standards, at a minimum attaining proficiency or better in reading/language arts and mathematics by 2013-2014.
All limited English proficient students will become proficient in English and reach high academic standards, at a minimum attaining proficiency or better in reading/language arts and mathematics.
All students will be taught by highly qualified teachers by 2005-2006.
All students will learn in schools that are safe and drug free.
All students will graduate from high school.

Visit this site frequently for the latest information on Virginia’s implementation of this sweeping federal legislation.
