2009 Virginia Teacher of The Year:

Region 6 Teacher of the Year, Stephanie A. Doyle, is a sixth-grade United States History I teacher at Breckinridge Middle School in Roanoke, where she also serves as the sixth-grade team leader and on the school’s site-based leadership team. She is a member of the National Museum of the American Indian, Organization of American Historians, Virginia Council for Social Studies and Civil War Preservation Trust. She graduated from Roanoke College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Doyle is also the Region 6 Teacher of the Year.

Every year, the Department of Education selects eight talented and effective educators to represent their peers as Virginia Regional Teachers of the Year. One teacher is selected from each of the department’s eight administrative regions after first being recognized by their schools and school divisions.

Nicole C. Winter

She is a National Board Certified Teacher. Winter holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of William and Mary and a master’s degree from the University of Virginia.

Sarah O.V. Lichtel

photo of Sarah O.V. LichtelSarah O.V. Lichtel is a third-grade teacher at Stonehouse Elementary School in Williamsburg-James City County. She is a National Board Certified Teacher. In addition, she is a member of the clinical faculty at the College of William and Mary’s School of Education as well as a cooperating teacher with the student-teaching program. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York.

Kyle J. Toth

photo of Kyle J. TothKyle J. Toth teaches English at Massaponax High School in Spotsylvania County. In 2002, he was recognized as Spotsylvania County New Teacher of the Year. He has served as a mentor teacher for the past five years and has made presentations to future English teachers at the University of Mary Washington. He is a graduate of James Madison University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English.

Patricia R. Herr

photo of Patricia R. HerrPatricia R. Herr teaches eighth-grade physical science at Smart’s Mill Middle School in Loudoun County. She is a National Board Certified Teacher. She is a recipient of the 2008 Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award. Herr earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social sciences from Frostburg State University, a master’s degree from Marymount University and a certificate in technology education from George Mason University, where she is an adjunct professor.

Therese R. Warner

photo of Therese R. Warner Therese P. Warner is a prekindergarten (PK) teacher at McGaheysville Elementary School in Rockingham County, where she is also the PK-first-grade team leader. Warner has mentored student teachers since 2001. She received a bachelor’s degree from James Madison University.

Teresa L. Hash

Hash is a third-grade teacher at Marion Intermediate School in Smyth County where she is on the professional development committee and serves as a mentor to new third-grade teachers. Hash earned a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary English and a master’s degree from Emory and Henry College.

Joy E. Utzinger

photo of Joy E. UtzingerJoy Utzinger is an art teacher at Prince Edward Elementary School in Prince Edward County. Utzinger is a member of the National Art Education Association, the Virginia Art Education Association and was invited to become a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society for key women educators. She received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Valparaiso University in Indiana.
