Learning History Course Offered |
The
University of Virginia, through a grant from the Department of Education, will
offer a distance learning history course during the spring of 2002, targeted to
teachers of Civics and Economics, Virginia and United States History, and
Virginia and United States Government. The course, HIST 604, Civil Rights in
U.S. and Virginia History, will be offered via satellite broadcast and
Internet. Teachers may enroll for three graduate credits through the University
of Virginia. Virginia teachers may also downlink and record the satellite
broadcasts and access course Internet materials independently at no charge.
Teachers may record and use broadcast materials for classroom use.
The course
directly addresses the Standards of Learning for history, government, and
civics and includes teaching strategies. Each presentation in the course,
assigned readings, and discussions will focus on how the Standards of Learning
for these subject areas relate to the civil rights movement.
The spring
offering of HIST 604 will begin on February 4, 2002, and end May 17, 2002. A
special reduced tuition of $399 per student has been established for Virginia
educators and students enrolled in Virginia teaching programs. Call Donna
Klepper, University of Virginia at (434) 982-5315 to register. The course
schedule number is 16139. Additional information about the course, including
course syllabus, is available on the Internet at: http://www.vcdh.virginia.edu/HIST604.
Broadcast
portions of the course will air on the Virginia Satellite Educational Network
(VSEN) satellite, Galaxy 3R, Channel 3, from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on broadcast
days listed in the syllabus. For more information on satellite reception,
contact Greg Weisiger, associate director, teleproduction, at (804) 692-0335.
