Instructional Support Activities provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars

 

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) have launched a “Teacher’s Corner on their Web site located at http://www.vfw.org/pdf/teacherscorne11.pdf. This site provides educational tools as well as an opportunity for educators to submit ideas. Information available at this site includes:

 

·       Speakers in the Classroom provides information on how to schedule speakers from the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary.

·       Patriot’s Pen provides information on an essay contest for 7th and 8th graders.

·       Voice of Democracy provides a scholarship opportunity for students in grades 9-12 who write and record patriotic essays.

·       National VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award is a program to recognize classroom teachers for promoting citizenship education. Deadline is November 1.

·       Our Flag provides a poster brochure describing the history of the U.S. flag and flag etiquette.

·       “Echoes from the Wall” provides teachers a curriculum about Vietnam. For more information, call 202-393-0090 or visit http://www.teachvietnam.org.

·       “Be Good, Smile Pretty” is a one-hour film about a daughter’s journey to find information about her father who was lost in Vietnam. It will air on PBS November 11, 2003 at 10:30 p.m. (Check local listings).
