South Asia Institute for Middle and High School
Teachers |
The Virginia Center for the Teaching of
International Studies (VCTIS) will host a seminar entitled “Regional Security,
Peace, and Conflict Management in South Asia” this summer for 20 middle and
high school teachers. The one-week
summer institute will be held July 11-15, 2005, in Richmond. A copy of the brochure is attached.
Using experts drawn from Virginia universities and non-profit centers in Washington, D.C., the institute will examine: 1) the peoples, languages, and religions in South Asia, 2) the historical roots of modern South Asian politics, 3) current challenges to political stability and democracy, 4) weapons of mass destruction, 5) regional conflict and security, 6) globalization, trade, and worldwide economic integration, and 7) peacemaking and reconciliation in the region. Participants will explore instructional strategies and materials on South Asia that can be used in the classroom. They will receive copies of “South Asia in Transition,” produced by the Southern Center for International Studies.
The program is sponsored by a grant from the United
States Institute of Peace, with materials funded by the Virginia Department of
Education. All lodging, travel, and
food expenses will be paid for participants outside the metropolitan Richmond
area. Each participant will receive a
$250 stipend. Additionally, there will
be two one-day follow-up sessions.
Participants must conduct workshops on the topic in their local area
upon completion of the institute.
