INFORMATIONAL

     This is to announce the distribution of subgrant
  applications for funds available from the Goals 2000:
  Educate America Act. Virginia Goals 2000 monies will be used
  to support state and local efforts to develop and implement
  comprehensive education reform plans. A key component of
  these plans is to provide computers and related technology
  for teacher and student use in the classroom. These Goals
  2000 funds will be made available in the form of competitive
  subgrants to school divisions to fund this component.

     The Department of Education has developed a competitive
  process to award subgrants to school divisions that submit
  an updated quality Technology/SOL Implementation Plan. The
  plans have been submitted by divisions to the Department of
  Education and are currently being reviewed. School divisions
  will be required to serve as fiscal agents for use of the
  funds. Grant amounts will be based upon the number of
  students in poverty in a division* multiplied by a dollar
  amount as determined by a division's Technology/SOL
  Implementation plan rating. Superintendent's Memo Number 156
  (enclosed) details the competitive process being used to
  determine awards. 

     The application is in two parts. The first part is an
  introduction that provides information about the grant as
  well as answers to questions related to subgrant
  application.  In the second part of the application packet
  is a cover page, requirements and assurances of the local
  school division's improvement plan and a description of
  school division equitable access and participation.

     Interested school divisions should submit a subgrant
  application which must be received by the Department of
  Education by 5:00 p. m. on Monday, December 15, 1997.  Mail

     Following a review of school division subgrant
  applications, it is anticipated that award announcements
  will be made by letter to the division superintendent
  between December 16-23, 1997.
