| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Governor's School for Agriculture Survey |
The 1998 General Assembly House Joint Resolution 200 directed the Board of Education to study the feasibility and appropriateness of establishing a Governor's School for Agriculture." Objectives of the study include the following: determining the need for specific agricultural, technical, and professional training and programs; types of curriculum; location, governance, and funding; creative methods of incorporating the education and experience of farming, forestry, business, horticulture, and other agriculture-related industries and other experts in the delivery of instruction; and similar regional special schools in other states. In order to complete the study, we need your assistance. A survey instrument was developed and sent to members of the agricultural community. The responses from the survey indicated that the agricultural community agreed with the need for a Governor's School for Agriculture for identified gifted students and would support the School by providing resources. The possible methods of providing a Governor's School for Agriculture include: (1) statewide summer residential school; (2) summer regional school; or (3) academic year regional school. Information obtained from the attached survey will assist us with the study. Please complete the attachment and return to Glenn A. Anderson, Ed.D., Specialist, Agricultural Education, Virginia Department of Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218-2120 by December 11, 1998.
