December 18, 1998 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Algebra Forum |
The Department of Education will conduct an Algebra Forum in Roanoke on January 21, 1999, and in Richmond on January 22, 1999. The Algebra Forum will be held at the Hotel Roanoke Conference Center on January 21 and at the Holiday Inn Koger Center in Richmond on January 22. The purpose of the Algebra Forum is to provide high school teachers and school administrators with information and strategies for improving student achievement on the algebra SOL assessments. We invite the mathematics contact person in each school division and a two-member team from each public high school in Virginia to attend the Algebra Forum closest to the division. We suggest that the high school team include one teacher of Algebra I or Algebra II and the principal or other school administrator. Information on the Algebra Forum and registration materials will be sent under separate cover to all high school principals and the mathematics contact person in each division. Marilyn Rindfuss, national mathematics consultant for Harcourt Brace will be the featured presenter at each forum. Ms. Rindfuss facilitated the SOL Assessment Content Review Committees for Algebra I and Algebra II. She also works with school divisions across the country in using assessment to improve mathematics instruction and achievement. The Algebra Forum is provided through an appropriation from the General Assembly and is in accordance with the Department of Education's responsibility to develop and pilot model training activities for teachers, principals, and superintendents that relate to the Standards of Learning content and assessments, and to technology applications. If you have questions about the Algebra Forum, please contact Mrs. Maureen Hijar, Mathematics Specialist, (804) 786-6418 or e-mail. PDS/mbh
