SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 93
November 12, 1999 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Survey of Limited-English-Proficient |
The Department of Education has received a federal grant to provide services to localities which serve LEP students. Because this grant requires the department to collect data not requested in previous fall surveys, we will need to conduct two surveys. The first is attached and replaces the fall survey. The second survey will be sent to you in the spring. In addition to providing the data for the attached survey, please begin assembling the data listed below so that the information will be readily available at the end of the school year for the second survey: · Number of LEP students retained (grades 7-12) · Number of LEP students who exited the ESL program · Number of teachers who received ESL in-service or pre-service training in 1999-2000. We ask that you provide us with the updated information regarding your ESL program on the attached form. Please forward this form by November 30, 1999, to Terry Franson, ESL specialist, at the address listed on the form. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Franson at tfranson@pen.k12.va.us or (804) 786-4640. PDS/TF/pbc Attachment: A hard copy of this memo and its attachment will be sent to the superintendent's office.
