$50,000 per site for four grants to establish a Project Lead The Way (PLTW)
program. Project Lead The Way offers a
four-year sequence of courses which, when combined with college preparatory
mathematics and science courses in high school, introduces students to the
scope, rigor, and discipline of engineering and engineering technology prior to
entering college. The primary courses
are Introduction to Engineering Design, Digital Electronics, Principles of
Engineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, and Engineering Design and
Development. Additional information
about Project Lead The Way can be accessed at http://www.pltw.org.
The grant
funds must be used to: a) establish a
new state-of-the-art Project Lead The Way laboratory, or b) modernize an
existing laboratory to fully/implement Project Lead The Way. Grant recipients will be notified by
December 15, 2005, to facilitate school divisions in planning their budgets for
2006-2007. Grant funds will be for the
school year 2006-2007.
Each
application received will be given priority consideration based on the strength
of the application and geographical/regional representation across the
state. Previously funded sites include
Arlington County, Hampton City, Henry County, Montgomery County, Pittsylvania
County, Prince William County, Richmond City, Smyth County, and
Williamsburg-James City County.
The following
criteria must be met when submitting an application:
·
A 100 percent
local match of funds is required (may use local or Perkins funds).
·
Only fully
completed applications will be considered.
Faxed copies of applications will not be reviewed.
·
School
divisions receiving the grants must commit to sending a lead teacher to the
PLTW summer in-service workshop.
·
The teacher
must hold an endorsement in Technology Education.
·
The school
and division must make a commitment to implement all five courses over a four-year
period.
·
The school
and division must make a commitment to complete the PLTW Program Certification
process by the end of the second year of the school site’s participation in the
PLTW Program.
Applications
from school divisions are to be received at the Department of Education by 4
