on November 9-11, 2005 – Hot Springs, Virginia |
The Virginia Association
of Elementary School Principals (VAESP) and the Virginia Department of
Education extend an invitation to all principals, assistant principals, and
other professional educators within your school division to participate in the
Annual Principals Leadership Conference to be held November 9-11, 2005, at the
Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia. This annual statewide event is designed to
develop and enhance elementary and middle school administrators’ leadership
skills, increase their understanding of current educational issues, and expand
their knowledge base for educational change. The theme for this year’s conference
is “Cultivating New Leadership: What Will Be Your Legacy.” Guest speakers, concurrent presenters, and
roundtable discussions will focus on student assessment, accountability,
instructional leadership, school management, and the ongoing challenges associated
with the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).
Guest speakers, as well as
concurrent presenters, will address issues related to Annual Yearly Progress
(AYP) and children with disabilities, new reporting requirements under IDEA,
data driven IEP, collaboration and inclusion for students with disabilities,
and legal process for conducting investigations. Department of Education staff
members will bring updates on timely issues such as an alternative route to
principal licensure, accountability and assessment, and modifications to the
2005-06 Academic Review Process.
Implementation of the Standards of Learning, as well as implementation
of the provisions of NCLB will also continue to be a focus of the
conference.
The pre-conference, “21st Century Skills: The Power of Digital Education” is
scheduled for Wednesday, November 9.
The keynote speaker is Allyson Knox, academic program manager for the
U.S. Partners in Learning Microsoft Corporation. Ms. Knox will focus on the power of digital learning. Topics
for the pre-conference will include training by DOE staff for Virginia’s
Educational Information Management System (EIMS), a management system for
principals, and the Marco Polo system for improving instructional resources. The Bedford County Sheriff’s Department will
share its nationally recognized program for attacking the issues of Internet
crime against children. Presenters will provide the most current information
regarding the latest in technology for teaching and learning.
