SUBJECT:

Weekend Institute for Teachers of Civics and Virginia and United States Government

 

The Virginia Department of Education is sponsoring a weekend institute for history and social science teachers.  The purpose of this institute is to make available a major professional development opportunity related to Civics and Economics and Virginia and United States Government.  All teachers who work with students in Civics and Economics and Virginia and United States Government are invited to attend.

 

The objectives of the weekend retreat are to:

 

  • provide new content information related to civics education by recognized experts;
  • examine local curriculum alignment to maximize the use of resources such as Department of Education documents and other products; and
  • demonstrate instructional materials that are available to support the History and Social Science Standards of Learning.

 

The date and location for the weekend institute is:

 

     Richmond:  December 8-10, 2006

Friday afternoon (on-site registration begins at 4 p.m., program begins at 6 p.m.), December 8, 2006, through Sunday lunch, December 10, 2006.

The weekend retreat will accommodate 50 participants.  A school division may send more than one person.  The Virginia Department of Education will provide lodging, meals, and materials for participants.  Teachers must register online to attend the institute.  Registration will be conduced on a first-come, first-serve basis and can be completed online at www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/cwc.
