Dr. Linda Wallinger – Assistant Superintendent
The Division of Instruction assists local school divisions in the design and implementation of instructional programs with emphasis on the implementation of high academic standards designed to increase student achievement. The division provides technical expertise and leadership in the areas of professional development, parental involvement, positive educational environments and the interpretation of federal and state initiatives, policies, regulations and guidelines. The division provides workshops and other training opportunities for educators and works collaboratively with public and private agencies, associations, foundations and consortia to address educational needs and concerns.

Office of Humanities & Early Childhood
Dr. Christine Harris – Director
The Office of Humanities and Early Childhood provides leadership, coordination and support of elementary and secondary programs in the areas of English, history and social science, fine arts, foreign language, and early childhood education. The office provides technical assistance and professional development to school division personnel in the implementation of the English, History and Social Science, Fine Arts, and Foreign Language Standards of Learning and the Foundation Blocks for Early Learning. Responsibilities also include the coordination of the Governor’s Foreign Language Academies, the Virginia Preschool Initiative, Project Graduation, and other programs to meet the needs of diverse learners and raise student achievement. The office provides technical assistance and professional development opportunities to school division personnel and responds to inquiries from educators, parents, and other citizens of the commonwealth.

Office of Mathematics & Governor's Schools
Michael Bolling – Director
The Office of Mathematics and Governor’s Schools provides leadership, coordination and support of elementary and secondary instructional programs in the areas of mathematics, gifted education, and Governor’s Schools. The office provides professional development and technical assistance to school division personnel in the implementation of the Mathematics Standards of Learning. In addition, the office provides guidance and technical support to Academic Year Governor’s Schools. Responsibilities also include the coordination of Summer Residential and Summer Regional Governor’s School programs, the Algebra Readiness Initiative, and other programs to meet the needs of diverse learners and raise student achievement. The office provides professional development opportunities and technical assistance to school division personnel and responds to inquiries from educators, parents and other citizens of the commonwealth.

Office of Science & Health Education
Eric Rhoades– Director
The Office of Science and Health Education provides leadership, coordination and support of elementary and secondary programs in the areas of driver education, health, physical education, and science. The office provides technical assistance and professional development to school division personnel in the implementation of the Science, Health, Physical Education, and Driver Education Standards of Learning. Responsibilities also include the coordination of the Mathematics and Science Partnership grants, USED Green Ribbon Schools, Virginia Middle School Teacher Corps, Governor’s Physical Activity Staff Wellness Award Program, Governor’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Database, Governor’s School Nutrition and Physical Activity Awards Program, Virginia Wellness-Related Fitness Program, and other programs to meet the needs of diverse learners, promote health, and raise student achievement. The office provides technical assistance and professional development opportunities to school division personnel and responds to inquiries from educators, parents, and other citizens of the commonwealth.

The Office of Program Administration and Accountability assists local school divisions with implementation of the requirements under the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 through professional development, technical assistance and program monitoring activities. Additional responsibilities include administration of state requirements associated with charter schools and regional alternative education programs.
