The mission of the Division of Policy and Communications is to assist the Virginia Board of Education, the governor and the General Assembly in the development of legislation, regulations and policies that promote student learning and achievement and to provide timely and accurate information about public education in the commonwealth. Division staff serve as liaison to the board, and support the board in promoting education reform. The division monitors federal policies and refers them to other divisions for oversight. The division maintains working relationships with the news media and educational organizations to ensure the timely distribution of accurate information about the agency and Virginia's public schools. The division also manages the department website and provides staff support to the board and the superintendent in developing and presenting information that communicates Board priorities and policies to the public and to other constituent groups.

The Office of Board Relations is the public's liaison to the Board of Education and assists members of the public who wish to address the board, either in person or in writing and is responsible for the dissemination of information regarding board meetings and actions.

Office of Communications
Charles B. Pyle – Director

The Office of Communications responds to inquires from the news media and the public, prepares news releases and manages the content of the agency's website. VDOE communications staff also research and prepare speeches, presentations and articles for the superintendent of public instruction and members of the Board of Education and provide a daily summary of education-related news articles for the agency's leadership team and board members.

The Policy Office advises agency personnel, school division personnel and the general public of applicable laws and regulations related to public education and the operation of government in general. The policy office also provides support to the General Assembly by tracking legislation, providing information to its members and advising agency personnel of critical issues identified by the General Assembly, both when in session and out-of-session.
