The Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP) and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) are pleased to provide you with registration material and a program agenda for the 2001 Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals Annual Conference. This conference will be held November 29 – December 1, 2001, at the Williamsburg Marriott in Williamsburg, Virginia. The VAESP and the VDOE co-sponsor this outstanding professional development opportunity on an annual basis. "Ringing in a New Era: Standards – Accountability – Assessment – Achievement" is the theme of this year’s conference, which is designed for principals, assistant principals, division superintendents, assistant superintendents, directors of instruction, supervisors, college personnel, and administrators of nonpublic elementary and middle schools.
 
 

Pre-Conference

Pre-conference workshops are scheduled for Thursday, November 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. featuring Drs. Doug Reeves and James S. Heywood, and Mr. D. Patrick Lacy, Esq.   Drs. Reeves and Heywood will focus on data and performance assessment, as well as improving student achievement. Mr. Lacy will focus on school law issues related to principals’ documentation and the evaluation of teachers.
 
 

Annual Conference

The annual conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, November 30 and conclude on Saturday, December 1. Keynote speakers for the conference include Drs. Robert J. Marzano and John Pikulski, as well as Ms. Sharon Darling, the National Director of the National Center on Family Literacy. Dr. Marzano’s presentation will focus on research-based classroom strategies for increasing student achievement. Dr. Pikulski will address issues related to fine-tuning instruction to increase student achievement. Ms. Darling's topic centers on current issues regarding family literacy and how it impacts student preparedness and successful function in school.
 
 

Staff members from the Department of Education, including the Division of Instruction, Division of Accountability, Division of Assessment and Reporting, and the Division of Technology will share the most recent update on issues that impact achievement, assessment, accountability, and accreditation at the state level.
 
 

Concurrent and single sessions, which will be conducted by principals, teachers, and central office personnel from across the commonwealth, include the following: strategies for analyzing classroom practices and methods for improving instruction; monitoring SOL implementation; analyzing and interpreting assessment data to improve instruction; and the many uses of education technology. Additional sessions will include strategies for improving student achievement through intervention and remediation.
 
 

The Williamsburg Marriott will house all the conference programs this year.
