| SUBJECT: | 2002 Governor’s Foreign Language Academies |
Superintendent’s Memorandum Informational No. 147, dated October 12, 2001, announces six Governor’s Foreign Language Academies sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education. This memorandum may be accessed on the Internet at:
/administrators/superintendents_memos/2001/inf147.html.
The three immersion programs in French, German, and Spanish provide an intensive experience and unique challenge for students who have excelled in language study to continue their study of that language in a total immersion environment. The Latin Academy provides continued study of Latin and an introduction to classical Greek. The non-immersion programs in Japanese and Russian provide an opportunity for interested students to be introduced to the Russian and Japanese cultures and languages.
Each high school may nominate at least one student for each academy according to the criteria in the application packets. Schools with enrollments of more than 750 in grades 10, 11, and 12 as of September 30, 2001, may nominate an additional candidate for French, German, Latin, and Spanish.
Complete information about the summer 2002 Governor’s Foreign Language Academies, including applications, informational flyers, nominee report forms, and order forms for testing materials, may be accessed directly at: http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/Language/GAindex.html.
All completed application forms and supporting materials must be postmarked to the Department of Education by January 15, 2002.
