SUBJECT: 2002 Summer Residential Governorís Schools

The Virginia Department of Education has released information explaining the 2002 Governorís Summer Programs through the October 12, 2001, Superintendent's Inf. Memorandum No. 147 at the following Web address:

/administrators/superintendents_memos/2001/inf147.html.

Seven Summer Residential Governorís Schools will be available in 2002:

These programs offer public, private, and home-schooled gifted students opportunities for four or five weeks of intensive study in academic areas, through mentorships, and in the visual and performing arts of vocal and instrumental music, dance, theater, and visual art. Each school division has a quota of students that may be nominated; that quota is based on the September 30 membership in the sophomore and junior classes of the locality. School divisions develop their own intermediate deadlines in order to return nominations to the Department of Education by February 13, 2002. Please refer to the attachment included with Superintendent's Inf. Memorandum No. 147 for the dates and locations of the programs and the dates and locations of the required statewide adjudication for the visual and performing arts applicants.

Applications and administrative guides for the 2002 Summer Residential Governorís Schools are available electronically, through the following Web address:
