Assistant Superintendent for Instruction
SUBJECT: Resource for Secondary Reading Strategies

The Department of Education is pleased to announce the availability of an additional teaching resource for high school English teachers. Secondary Reading Strategies Applied to David Baldacci’s Novel Wish You Well is now available on the Department of Education’s website at:

http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/English/wishyouwell.pdf.

This document was developed in collaboration with English teachers who attended several workshops related to the improvement of reading skills for reluctant and struggling readers at the high school level. The publication outlines strategies and activities related to Wish You Well, a novel written by Virginia author David Baldacci. The lesson plans provide ideas that promote reading as a strategic and interactive process. Many of these strategies could be applied to other literary works that would be included in a secondary English curriculum.

For further information, please contact Dr. Linda Wallinger (mailto:lwalling@pen.k12.va.us), director of secondary instruction, at (804) 225-2880.
