The
Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce the second
annual Virginia Financial Literacy Summit to be held on October
18, 2006, at the Richmond Marriott (500 E. Broad Street, Richmond,
23219). The Virginia Jump$tart
Coalition hosts the summit to bring together Virginias high school
administrators and teachers as well as the Commonwealths leading
proponents of financial literacy to learn about this serious issue and hear
possible solutions. More information
about the summit, including registration instructions, may be found at http://www.vscpa.com/Summit_Registration.aspx.
As
announced in Superintendents Memo 100 in May, 2006, the
2005 General Assembly approved Senate Bill 950, a bill directing the Virginia
Board of Education to establish objectives for economic education and
financial literacy. As a result,
the Code of Virginia 22.1200.03 required the Board of
Education to develop and approve objectives for economics education and
financial literacy to be required of all students at the middle and high
school levels to further the development of knowledge, skills, and
attitudes needed for responsible citizenship in a constitutional
democracy. On April 26, 2006, the
Board of Education adopted the Economics and Financial Literacy objectives. The Virginia Department of Education held
seven statewide teacher training sessions in June, 2006, on personal
finance curriculums, funded and led by Virginia Jump$tart member
organizations.
The
special summit on October 18 will complement and expand upon these training
sessions by providing Virginia
high school administrators and educators with best practices, additional
resources and teaching models for integrating financial education in the
classroom.
