SUBJECT: Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals Annual Assistant Principals/Lead Teachers Conference, March 23-24, 2009, Williamsburg Marriott, Williamsburg, Virginia

The Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP) and the Virginia Department of Education (DOE) extend an invitation to all assistant principals, lead teachers, principals, and other professional educators within your school or school division to participate in the 2009 Annual Assistant Principals/Lead Teachers Professional Development Conference.  The conference will be held March 23-24, 2009, at the Williamsburg Marriott in Williamsburg, Virginia.

This conference is designed specifically for assistant principals and lead teachers who are responsible for providing instructional leadership in schools.  Attendees will have the opportunity to hear comments from Dr. Patricia I. Wright, superintendent of public instruction; Dr. Billy K. Cannaday, Jr., dean of continuing and professional studies at the University of Virginia; Dr. Stewart Roberson, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools; and Dr. Patricia Mathes, professor of teaching and learning at Southern Methodist University.  On Tuesday, March 24, 2009, Mr. Ron Nash, author of "The Active Classroom", will close the conference with a presentation on Gotta Move, Gotta Share:  Life in the Active Classroom.

A variety of concurrent sessions will be offered to participants including an update on the implementation of the 2008 History and Social Science Standards of Learning, teaching number and number sense in mathematics, developing cross-curricular units, planning and implementing an effective reading program, academic achievement and discipline, introduction to the new Virginia Board of Education requirements for administrators, and politics and the principalship.
