COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
February 16, 2010
FROM: Linda M. Wallinger, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology in collaboration with the Professor Garfield Foundation is working to have a special Garfield license plate issued for education. A Senate bill has been introduced and we are now in the process of obtaining the required 350 prepaid applications within the next 30 days before the bill is submitted for approval to the General Assembly and the Governor. The revenue from these plates will be used to support joint projects of the Professor Garfield Foundation and the Department of Education. An example of one such project is the Infinite Learning Lab located at http://www.infinitelearninglab.org.
Additional details about this initiative can be found in Superintendent’s Memo #032-10 located at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/administrators/superintendents_memos/2010/032-10.shtml.
Attachment A is an 8½” x 11” poster that can be displayed throughout your buildings should you wish to inform your staff and community of the Department of Education’s plans to have a special Garfield license plate issued to support education. Your assistance with this is very much appreciated.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Betsy Gragnani, administrative assistant, by e-mail at Betsy.Gragnani@doe.virginia.gov or by telephone at (804) 692-0334.
