The College Orientation Workshop (COW) will be offered at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), June 26, 2011, through July 23, 2011. This workshop is a challenging summer educational enrichment program. The goal is to prepare male, minority high school rising juniors and seniors to achieve success during the remainder of their high school careers and beyond. This is done by cultivating confidence, greater self-esteem, a stronger work ethic, and a commitment to achieving success in spite of the many challenges facing them.
During the 24 years of its operation at VMI, COW has influenced the lives of approximately 600 participants, many of whom have now gone on to complete college, trade schools, the military, and other civilian pursuits. As of August 2010, approximately 70 to 75 percent of former participants have attended college.
The program is free to participants.
Specific Objectives of the COW Workshop:
Rising 11th- and 12th- grade male, minority students interested in the workshop must fill out a five-part, online application. Applications should be accessed and submitted via the COW Web site at http://cow4life.wordpress.com/. The deadline for submitting application materials is Monday, May 16, 2011.
