COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
April 10, 2012
FROM: Linda M. Wallinger, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction
The College Board has announced that it will subsidize the registration fee for a limited number of AP Biology, Latin, and Spanish Literature teachers to attend an AP Summer Institute this summer. This subsidy is intended to assist with costs where cuts to division and school professional development budgets are preventing teachers from attending. Teachers of the eligible courses, who want to attend an AP Summer Institute and have no other source of funding, are invited to apply.
With the AP course redesign taking effect in the 2012-2013 academic year, many teachers are interested in attending professional development programs this summer. Attending an AP Summer Institute in summer 2012 is crucial for many AP Biology, AP Spanish Literature, and AP Latin teachers seeking to ensure a smooth transition to the redesigned courses, which feature 21st century skills, inquiry-based approaches, and strong alignment to best practices in higher education.
AP Summer Institute locations and dates can be found on the Web at: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/events.
The College Board funding will pay the full registration fee to attend any AP Summer Institute in the designated subject areas. The teacher or the division/school will be responsible for any travel, lodging, or other expenses. Since available funds are not sufficient to cover all AP teachers in each subject, funds will be distributed via an application process that includes a written essay.
Application documents are available at: http://fs18.formsite.com/EquityAccess/form15/index.html.
The application is open to all AP teachers teaching AP Biology, Latin, or Spanish Literature in the 2012-2013 academic year at public or private schools. (Note: the subsidy is not for AP Spanish Language, but for AP Spanish Literature.) Teachers who have already registered to attend an AP Summer Institute can apply for the College Board funding if the cost of attendance is presenting the teacher or the division/school with an economic hardship.
Applications are being accepted from April 5 to April 22, 2012, and notifications will be sent the week of April 23rd. The College Board will pay the full registration fee directly to the AP Summer Institute for selected teachers.
