SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 6
January 12, 1996 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | William C. Bosher, Jr.
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Information on Flexibility Provisions in Board of Education Regulations |
Over the past several months, the Department has responded to two requests for information on the degree to which there is flexibility or waiver provisions in the Standards of Accreditation (SOA) and other Board regulations. The results are comprehensive and I wanted to share them with you. First, HB 2601 of the 1995 session of the General Assembly requested the Board to identify provisions for flexible implementation of SOA requirements. The first attachment is the briefing document provided in response to that request. The second attachment is another briefing developed at the request of the Subcommittee Studying Charter Schools, which looks at opportunities for flexible implementation in other Board regulations beyond the SOA. These documents shed light on the flexibility currently available to school divisions, and hope you find them useful. If you have any questions, please call Cathy Clark or Lin Corbin-Howerton in the Division of Policy and Public Affairs at (804) 225-2403. WCBJr/lch Attachments: A hard copy of this memo and its attachment will be sent to the Superintendent's office.
