SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 29
February 2, 1996 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | William C. Bosher, Jr.
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Report on the Needs of Medically Fragile Students |
Attached for your information is a copy of Senate Document No. 5, Report on the Needs of Medically Fragile Students which was prepared pursuant to Senate Joint Resolution 306, enacted by the 1993 General Assembly. We encourage you to examine carefully those recommendations that apply to local school divisions. Particular attention is called to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Under these provisions, some students with specialized health care needs may meet the 504 definition of handicapped and thus require a 504 plan even though they have not been found eligible for special education under state and federal requirements. Therefore, this document should be reviewed by your division 504 coordinator. Regarding recommendation 10, the Department of Education is cooperating with the Department of Health in the development of procedural guidelines related to specialized health care needs of students. We envision this document will be ready for distribution for the 1996-97 school year. Questions about this report may be addressed to Mr. H. Douglas Cox, Director, Office of Special Education and Student Services at (804) 225-2402, or Ms. Nancy Ford, School Nurse Consultant, Virginia Department of Health at (804) 786-7367. WCBJr/cp Attachment: This supts memo and its attachment will be sent to the superintendent's office.
