| SUBJECT: | 1996 Annual Conference of Division Superintendents |
The Annual Conference of Division Superintendents is scheduled for April 21-24, 1996, at the Roanoke Airport Marriott, Roanoke, Virginia. This is the eighth conference co-sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Association of School Superintendents. There will be a $150 registration fee for this conference. Registration for the conference will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 21. The conference will end by noon on Wednesday, April 24, 1996. The conference theme, "Fulfilling Great Expectations," will be addressed by several high-profile speakers including: Jonathan Kozol, author of Savage Inequalities and Amazing Grace; Gerald Terozzi, newly appointed U.S. Assistant Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education; Robert Slavin, education reform leader known for his research in cooperative learning and his program at Johns Hopkins, "Success for All"; Philip Vincent, author of Developing Character in Students; and Wayne Worner, Dean of the Virginia Tech College of Education. The theme will also be reinforced by two panel discussions. The first panel discussion, "Helping School Divisions Meet the SOLs," will be presented by three representatives from the Virginia Department of Education. The second panel discussion, which addresses "Schools of Choice for Parents," includes: Pat Grippe, Assistant Superintendent of Douglas County Schools, Colorado; Pat Kinlaw, Director of Magnet Programs, Wake County, North Carolina; and Will Shaw, President of the Virginia Home Association. On the final day of the conference, VASS members will have an opportunity to provide their input on the future of the organization at a unique Town Meeting. In addition to the traditional golf, tennis, and volleyball tournaments, the conference will include breakfasts, receptions, a picnic, a Monday luncheon featuring Henrico County Superintendent of Schools Mark Edwards as the speaker, and a Tuesday evening banquet with Franklin County Superintendent of Schools Leonard Gereau as the main speaker. The 1997 Regional Superintendents of the Year and the 1997 Virginia Superintendent of the Year will be announced at the banquet. Supts.
