| SUBJECT: | Calculator Based Laboratory Course Via Satellite |
The Department of Education, through the Virginia Satellite Educational Network (VSEN), will offer a four part course on the use of scientific probes with graphing calculators in the science curriculum. This in-service course is designed for teachers in all disciplines of science. The use of technology in science instruction, including graphing calculators, is part of the newly adopted Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools. Part one of this course will cover basic operations of the graphing calculator. Part two will introduce probeware, science applications of the graphing calculator and lessons on motion. Part three will concentrate on activities associated with light and part four will cover sound, heat and cold. Instructors are Dan Yates from the Electronic Classroom at Varina High School and Gloria Clark from the Mathematics and Science Center. Broadcast dates are May 1, 3, 8 and 10 from 11:25 am - 12:25 pm on satellite Galaxy 6 channel 21. A workbook is also included and can be obtained by calling (800) 246-8736. The course and workbook are offered to Virginia teachers at no charge. Schools may record the programs and retain a copy for future training.
