SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 76
April 5, 1996

INFORMATIONAL

TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: William C. Bosher, Jr.
Superintendent of Public Instruction
SUBJECT: Addendum to English K-5 Textbooks

As stated in Superintendent's Memo No. 26 (Informational),
January 26, 1996, the Department of Education extended an
invitation to submit new K-5 reading/language arts series to
publishers who may have missed the 1994 Department of
Education submission deadline.  A screening committee was
convened to review the newer submissions and an addendum to
the earlier list is given below.  Profiles specifying the
degree of correlation to the revised English Standards of
Learning will be distributed to textbook coordinators in
April 1996.  However, the books and technology-based
instructional materials listed below will not receive state
contract prices.  If the newer materials are selected,
school divisions are encouraged to negotiate local contracts
with individual publishers on the addendum list.

The following K-5 English instructional materials have been
reviewed by a statewide screening committee to validate
correlations to the revised English Standards of Learning:

Houghton Mifflin Company.  Invitations to Literacy.  K-5
Jostens Learning Corporation. (Technology-based software  programs).
     Elementary Reading and Writing.                   K-5
     Integrated Language Arts.                         K-3
  Macmillan/McGraw-Hill.  Spotlight on Literacy.       1-5
  Scholastic, Inc.  Literacy Place.                         K-5
Silver Burdett Ginn, Inc.  Literature Works.              K-5
