SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 165
October 4, 1996 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Richard T. La Pointe
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | 1997 Governor's School Selection Process |
Copies of the 1997 Summer Residential Governor's School Applications, including applications for the Governor's Foreign Language Academies, are now available on diskette upon request (Wordperfect: version 3.x for Macintosh and version 5.x for DOS machines). Contact Cheryl Eberly at (804) 225-2067 for diskettes. Student selection for these academic programs will be similar to the process used last year. The visual and performing arts selection process continues to require participation in state-sponsored auditions. School divisions are guaranteed representation in the academic program. Participation in the arts program is guaranteed by Superintendents' Regions. The selection process for the foreign language academies remains solely competitive. A student may apply for only one program. It is anticipated that the local share of the cost for room and board, academic field trips, and other planned academic activities will again, as in 1996, be based upon the composite index or 50%, whichever is less. Local divisions may not charge students to attend the programs. Cost for a private school student will be based on the composite index of the division where the student resides or 50%, whichever is less. A division/private school may nominate students based on nominee quotas and in accordance with the division's/school's ability to pay. The Department of Education will use the following per pupil amounts: Academics and Arts Programs .......................$1,126 NASA,VIMS Mentorships..............................$1,880 MCV Mentorship.....................................$1,550 Foreign Language Academies ........................$1,455 Travel to and from the program and money for personal expenses must be provided by participants. Thank you for your continued interest in and support of the Governor's School programs. For further information, contact Dr. Janie Craig (Academics, Arts, Mentorships) (804) 225-2884 or David Cox (Foreign Language Academies) (804) 225-2593.
