SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 37
February 28, 1997 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Richard T. La Pointe
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG) Grant Application Process |
Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) funds are available through the Department of Education's competitive grant application process to establish programs based on the Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) national model. These programs will be funded for school divisions in the state and will carry the name Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG), consistent with a newly formed private foundation of the same name. School divisions will be required to match the JTPA grants with local funds and/or private funds. The primary purpose of the grant program is to assist twelfth-grade youth, who are economically disadvantaged and are not achieving in school, to complete high school and to secure and retain quality jobs. The school division must employ a job specialist, who will work directly with 35-45 students who meet the program criteria. School divisions may pool their resources to develop a regional application. School divisions interested in submitting applications for funding in the next fiscal year (July 1, 1997 - June 30, 1998) must complete the forms in the grant application packet and submit them to Robert Almond at the Department of Education no later than April 4, 1997. If additional information is needed please get in touch with Elizabeth Hawa at 804/225-2836. RTL/eh
