SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 41
February 28, 1997 |
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Richard T. La Pointe
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | SOL Field Test Pre-Administration Workshops |
In preparation for the Standards of Learning (SOL) field test slated for April 29-May 2, 1997, the Department of Education will conduct regional pre-administration workshops throughout the state. The purpose of the workshops will be to review the administration procedures associated with the SOL field test. Participants will then be able to return to their school divisions and conduct training for others in the proper administration of the SOL field test. In scheduling these workshops, we have not been able to find any single set of times that will work for all school divisions. Spring breaks vary across the state, making a single set of times impossible. In an effort to address your scheduling differences, while providing the workshops in sufficient time for participants to return to their school divisions and conduct training, we have scheduled two sets of workshops. Both sets provide an opportunity for regional workshops in the western, central, and eastern parts of the state. The workshops schedule is as follows: March 24 - Roanoke--Holiday Inn Tanglewood March 25 - Richmond--Holiday Inn Central March 26 - Culpeper--Holiday Inn April 2 - Abingdon--Camberley's Martha Washington Inn April 3 - Harrisonburg--Sheraton Inn April 4 - Hampton--Holiday Inn Coliseum April 7 - Richmond--Holiday Inn Central Division Superintendents Page 2 February 28, 1997 All workshops will begin at 9:30 a.m. and are anticipated to close at 12:30 p.m. We have assigned school divisions to these workshops as we have done in the past (see Attachment A); however, we expect that many school divisions will want to change their sites to work around their spring break schedules. We will accommodate these changes, even if we have to schedule a second workshop in a location on the same day. If a second location is scheduled, it will run from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. To meet your need for flexibility and have sufficient materials at a particular location, or to schedule a second session, we need to know immediately those divisions wishing to attend a location other than the one to which they are assigned. As with our previous workshops, we will be asking that the Division Director of Testing and two additional persons from each school division attend these workshops. We will not be able to accommodate more additional persons from school divisions. Please return the attached form to Judy Singh in the Division of Assessment and Reporting indicating your preferences regarding these workshops no later than March 12, 1997. We must receive your form on this timeline to make adjustments in the schedule as requests may dictate. The Division of Assessment and Reporting will work directly with your Division Director of Testing to solve any scheduling problems that arise. We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to working with your staff to make this a convenient and meaningful workshop. Your school division's participation in this activity is critical for the proper administration of the SOL field test. RTL/mwc Attachments: A hard copy of this memo and its attachments will be sent to the superintendent's office.
